A True Home for the Mat: Janesville Wrestling Finds Dedicated New Room
/Just one year ago, Janesville High School revived its wrestling program, marking the return of a proud small-town Iowa tradition. After a full season back on the mat, the program is thriving, building momentum, and deepening its roots in the community.
However, the program's initial journey had its challenges, particularly in finding a dedicated space. Practices were initially held in borrowed, tight quarters, which Superintendent BJ Meaney noted was not a sustainable solution.
"Wrestling is obviously very new to Janesville, and space on our campus is at a premium! We had to weigh building a new structure vs. modifying current structures all while being mindful of the cost! Initially, the wrestling room was located in the elementary gym, a space that is also used for PE classes, Latchkey, nap room, and more. This was hardly an ideal or long term solution. The board reviewed three options presented to them by Modern Design, and elected to remodel two garage/storage areas."
The school board's decision to remodel two garage and storage areas, as presented by Modern Design, transformed underutilized campus space into a permanent, dedicated home for the team. This new facility has quickly become the heart of the program.
The new room is bright, spacious, and lined with the school's colors, standing as a symbol of the team's growth. Returning athletes agree that the energy in the new facility feels "different—focused, confident, and proud". The space is outfitted with top-quality mats, updated lighting, and motivational wall art, designed to inspire the team.
Superintendent Meaney expressed great satisfaction with the finished renovation.
"In my opinion, the structure turned out really well. It is clean, modern, updated, and really sharp. The work that the wrestling club is doing to outfit the room will also look great! New wrestling mats, new wall pads and more will be here and installed before we know it!"
The new room is a daily reminder of the community's commitment to its youth. With youth participation in the feeder program up and community support stronger than ever, Janesville wrestling is not just back—it's here to stay.
