High Schoolers Start a New Tradition: 'Legacy Bags' for Janesville's Youngest Wildcats
/The Janesville Consolidated School District is seeing a wonderful new tradition take hold, thanks to a thoughtful community service project led by a group of high school students. Recognizing the excitement (and perhaps nervousness!) of starting school, these older students created "Legacy Bags" for every incoming kindergartener.
The goal is simple: for the high schoolers to leave a positive legacy for the new students just beginning their educational journey at Janesville CSD.
A Project Built on Community Generosity
This special initiative was entirely student-driven and funded through bake sales. The group gave a special shout-out to community member Darla Litterer, whose generosity in baking items allowed the students to raise the necessary funds to purchase the items for the bags.
What's Inside a Legacy Bag?
More than just a welcome gift, the Legacy Bag is a folder packed with important information designed to help the young students succeed in school and beyond.
Janesville is a proud Leader in Me Lighthouse School, which teaches students leadership and communication skills using the 7 Habits of Highly Effective People. The resources included in the bag reflect this mission to GROW, SERVE, & INSPIRE.
Key information topics include:
The Leader in Me (7 Habits of Highly Effective People)
The importance of reading with and to young children
Getting involved with local libraries
Encouraging participation in extracurricular activities
Developing a Growth Mindset and understanding The Power of Defeat
As an extra special gift, the high schoolers also included a gently used book from a local library for each child to keep.
A Legacy of Leadership
The high school group, representing the classes of 2025 through 2029, signed off with the sincere hope that the incoming kindergarteners will "GROW, SERVE, & INSPIRE" as much as they have had the opportunity to do during their time at Janesville CSD.
This project beautifully demonstrates the school mission in action, truly welcoming the newest members of the Wildcat Family.
