Honoring History and Resilience

In honor of Patriot Day, Janesville CSD fourth graders dedicated time today to reflect on the events of September 11, 2001…learning the history while paying tribute to the victims, survivors, and brave first responders who showed extraordinary heroism on that day.

To bring history into the classroom, Mrs. Chase shared original archive editions of the Waterloo-Cedar Falls Courier published on that fateful day. Reading through the authentic news coverage allowed students to see how the nation united in the face of tragedy. Working in small groups, the fourth graders:

• Analyzed front-page headlines and photographs capturing the immediate aftermath.

• Compared their notes and findings to understand how news developed in real time.

• Reflected on the selfless courage of the firefighters, police officers, and everyday heroes who rushed to help others.

This primary source study directly complements what students are currently reading in class: Ground Zero by Alan Gratz. The novel retells the events of 9/11 through the eyes of fictional characters experiencing the real-world tragedy, helping students build empathy and appreciate the profound resilience shown by ordinary people during extraordinary circumstances.

By pairing fictional narrative with historical journalism, our fourth graders gained a meaningful, age-appropriate perspective on national history…remembering those we lost and honoring the enduring spirit of heroism that defines Patriot Day.
