JCSD Hosts Creative Fraction Fair for Third and Fourth Graders

On November 14th, JCSD’s fourth graders brought math to life with an exciting Fraction Fair, an innovative event designed to make learning fractions fun and interactive. The fair was the brainchild of Mrs. Chase, a fourth-grade teacher who wanted to create a hands-on experience that connected math concepts to real-world activities.

Mrs. Chase envisioned a day where fourth graders could share their knowledge of fractions through engaging activities with third graders. The concept included stations featuring food, crafts, and games, all designed to demonstrate fractions in action. This collaborative approach allowed students to learn by teaching and doing.

The Fraction Fair was truly a team effort. Mrs. Chase worked closely with Mrs. Hughes (4th grade teacher), Ms. Meyer (student teacher), Mrs. Graham (instructional coach), and Mrs. Sandlin (teacher-librarian) to design a mini-unit that integrated math, creativity, and communication skills. Special education teacher Ms. Petsche also provided valuable support throughout the process.

In late October and early November, fourth-grade students brainstormed ideas, selected their projects, and created supply lists. Each group chose a unique way to showcase fractions—whether through dividing snacks, crafting fraction-themed art, or designing fraction-based games.

During the week of November 10, students dedicated time each day to preparing their stations. With guidance from their teachers and coaches, they worked collaboratively to finalize their projects and practice explaining fraction concepts to younger peers.

On November 14, the gym transformed into a lively Fraction Fair. Third graders and their teachers rotated through three different stations, sampling treats, playing games, and creating crafts—all while learning how fractions are part of everyday life. The event was filled with smiles, laughter, and plenty of “aha” moments as students connected math to real-world experiences.

The Fraction Fair was more than just a fun day—it was an opportunity for students to deepen their understanding of fractions, practice communication skills, and experience the joy of collaborative learning. By turning math into an interactive celebration, JCSD educators showed how creativity and teamwork can make learning unforgettable.
